Lie, steal, and smear

Power is not a means; it is an end.

It’s started again. Scratch that, it never ended. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. After a decade of mismanagement, corruption, and authoritarian overreach it’s not like they could stand on the strength of their record. In case you haven’t been paying attention and if the polls are any indication (and can be trusted) many Canadians haven’t, here are some highlights (lowlights?):

• GDP per capita has cratered.

• Government employment has exceeded that of the private sector, masking true unemployment and increasing the burden of taxpayers. The population has increased 16% since 2014 while:

  • Government employment skyrocketed by 34.3%

  • The private sector (including self-employment) grew by a dismal 8.6%

• Immigration has exceeded housing growth by 1,317,803.

• Government spending has exceeded inflation and population growth. In 2024-25 per capita government spending is $13,146. If it remained at 2015-16 levels (adjusted for inflation and population growth) it would be $10,650. That’s a 23.4% increase.

• Opioid deaths have tripled

• Violent crime has skyrocketed

The only program the government seems to be able to run effectively is MAID.

So, Canadians are poorer, less safe, and have fewer affordable places to live. There’s always a silver lining though, if you feel your mental health deteriorating, as more and more Canadians do, at least the government will help you end your life.

What do you do if you’ve ruined your country?

If you can’t stand on your record, and the Liberals can’t, what do you do? It’s actually a lot simpler than you might think.

Phase I – Rebrand (lie)

Luckily for the Liberals most Canadians aren’t paying attention. How else do you explain the long list of Liberal corruption scandals that never seem to matter at election time? Canadians poke their heads up whenever it’s time to vote, pick the guy with the best socks or who they’d most like to have a beer with, and then return to a state of cluelessness.

The Liberals solved their image (Trudeau) problem by replacing Trudeau with Mark Carney. Honestly, replacing Trudeau was probably overkill. If Justin Trudeau had grown a mustache and started calling himself Justin Castro a good portion of Canadians would probably have thought he was a different person.

How well did rebranding work? See for yourself:

Not only did it work on the average Canadian, but it seems to have worked on party members as well. Sean Fraser, the serial blunderer who was minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship from 2021 to 2023 and minister of housing, infrastructure and communities from 2023 to 2024 stepped down in December 2024 to spend time with his family. Well, family time lasted until March 25^th, as two weeks after Carney became party leader Fraser decided to run for office again. That’s either a win for rebranding or his family really sucks.

Sure, rebranding fools most Canadians, but the press will eventually ask you questions, even when the press is bought and paid for by the Liberal government. What are you going to say? It’s not like you can say “we’re doing a great job, so four more years of the lost decade.” Once again, there’s a simple answer:

Phase II - Steal

The Liberals are nothing if not dishonest. If you don’t have any good ideas of your own, just steal someone else’s. They’ve done it before.

Prior to the 2015 Canadian Federal Election, the Liberal Party, found itself in a difficult situation. The NDP experienced a surge in popularity, at times surpassing the Conservatives. For instance, an EKOS poll from June 2015 showed the NDP at 29.7%, the Conservatives at 35.4%, and the Liberals at 19.6%. The Liberal’s response was to shift leftward bringing them closer to some traditional NDP priorities. This was a tactical move to appeal to progressive voters who might have otherwise supported the NDP. The NDP responded to the Liberal threat by leaning harder into labor rights and anti-corporate rhetoric, which the Liberals largely sidestepped. This strategy resulted in the Liberals winning 39.47% of the vote, an almost 20% increase over the EKOS poll, while the NDP won 19.72%, a drop of 10%.

If it worked once, why not do it again? Wait, isn’t it unethical, underhanded, and deceitful to be progressive in 4 elections and then say you’re a conservative in this one? Yes, but who cares? More importantly, how many Canadians are even paying attention? The advantage of not having an ideological foundation is you can pretty much take any policy position you want. Believing in things is for losers. Winners believe what the voters believe, what will get them to vote for you. Is it no longer trendy to be a progressive? Fine, we’re conservatives. Care more about the cost of living than you do about the environment. Isn’t that odd, so do we. Think criminals should go to jail? We’ve been saying that forever (for·ev·er – adverb – a very short time).

Here is a short list of conservative policies that the Liberals have stolen adopted:

Housing Policies

• GST Exemption on New Homes: The Liberals propose eliminating the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on new home purchases under $1 million for first-time buyers. This mirrors the Conservative policy of removing GST on new homes under $1.3 million for all buyers.

• Accelerated Home Construction: Carney's plan to double annual housing construction to nearly 500,000 units aligns with the Conservative emphasis on increasing housing supply to combat affordability issues. ​

Tax Reforms

• Income Tax Reduction: The Liberal platform includes reducing the lowest income tax bracket from 15% to 14%, a move that reflects the Conservative proposal to lower it to 12.75%. ​

• Capital Gains Tax: The Liberals have decided to scrap the proposed capital gains tax increase, aligning with the Conservative stance on maintaining current capital gains taxation levels. ​

Environmental and Energy Policies

• Energy Infrastructure Expansion: The Liberal platform now supports expanding Canada's energy infrastructure to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, a policy traditionally championed by the Conservatives.

• Carbon Tax Reform: Carney plans to replace the consumer carbon tax with a program that rewards green choices, while maintaining the tax on large industrial emitters. This approach is a departure from the previous Liberal policy and moves closer to the Conservative position of opposing carbon taxes on consumers. ​

Note: The Liberals spent much of the last six years arguing that the Carbon Tax did not impact consumers only to claim credit for the drop in gas prices when Carney cancelled the consumer carbon tax. It’s important to remember not to get so caught up with stealing that you forget to keep lying.

Defense and Trade

• Defense Spending: The Liberals commit to spending 2% of GDP on defense, meeting the NATO target. This aligns with the Conservative focus on strengthening national defense. ​

• Trade Policies: Carney's administration plans to impose dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. in response to trade disputes, reflecting a more assertive trade stance similar to that of the Conservatives.

The Liberals have now rebranded (lied) and stolen so they might think they’re in the clear, but what if someone notices? Yes, most Canadians won’t, but why take the chance? Look around the world, what have other left-wing parties done when faced with growing conservative movements? That’s right, it’s time for phase III…

Phase III – Smear

Not only is this a strategy used around the world, but it is a tried-and-true strategy of the Liberal Party in every recent election:

• Andrew Scheer's Leadership (2017) - Upon Andrew Scheer's election as Conservative leader in 2017, Liberal MPs characterized the leadership race as a contest between "far-right social Conservatives and far-right economic Conservatives," suggesting that Scheer's victory represented a win for the former. ​CTV News

• Erin O'Toole's Leadership and Liberal Criticism (2021) - In 2021, the Liberal Party distributed fundraising letters accusing the Conservatives under Erin O'Toole of "continuing a worrisome pattern of divisive politics and catering to the extreme right." They cited O'Toole's campaign slogan "Take back Canada" and images of Conservative deputy leader Candice Bergen wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat as examples. ​Canadian Inquirer

• Liberal MP's Statement on Conservative Influence (March 2022) - A Liberal Member of Parliament publicly stated that the Conservative Party was being influenced by far-right elements, particularly in the context of the "Freedom Convoy" protests. The MP expressed concern over the party's alignment with extremist views during the COVID-19 pandemic. ​Western Standard

• Justin Trudeau's Accusation Against Pierre Poilievre (2024) - In April 2024, during a heated exchange in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre of "shamefully" associating with "white nationalists." This was in reference to Poilievre's appearance at an anti-carbon tax protest where symbols linked to far-right groups were present. BBC

• Liberal Portrayal of Pierre Poilievre as a Right-Wing Populist (March 2025) - In the lead-up to the 2025 federal election, the Liberal Party portrayed Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre as a right-wing populist akin to former U.S. President Donald Trump. A Liberal advertisement accused Poilievre of supporting anti-government movements during the COVID-19 pandemic and suggested he would acquiesce to Trump's demands. ​Reuters

Party members can only do so much. Fortunately, their supporters are always willing to lend a hand. The Liberals can always count on the dishonest, ideologically captured, and other useful idiots to help spread “the message” as the following proves:

Conclusion

No strategy is perfect, and the Liberals may run into the occasional person who is paying attention or a member of the press who isn’t on the government payroll. This could lead to uncomfortable facts such as:

• ​Poilievre has never stated any intention to end Canada's publicly funded healthcare system. He has affirmed his support for public healthcare, stating: "I believe everybody should be able to get public health care. That's the system I've relied on my whole life." His proposals include initiatives like the "Blue Seal" program to standardize credentials for healthcare professionals across provinces and expedite the approval of foreign-trained doctors and nurses, aiming to address staffing shortages. • Poilievre has consistently stated that he does not intend to change abortion laws if elected Prime Minister. He has affirmed that under his leadership, a Conservative government would not introduce or pass legislation restricting access to abortion. ​Global News

Here’s my advice to Carney and the Liberals:

Stick to “the message” and never let the truth get in the way of a good lie! Remember, truth is for people trying to help Canadians, it’s the tool of suckers. As a Liberal you believe Orwell’s mantra from 1984, “power is not a means; it is an end.”

The election cycle is short in Canada so stay strong! There’s only a couple of weeks left and after the election you can go back to what you’ve been doing for the last decade, letting in more immigrants than Canada’s social services and infrastructure can support, making the country more dangerous by being soft on crime while confiscating guns from law abiding citizens, and handing out drugs to addicts.
